The Eden Biomes - January 2002

The Eden Project
A couple of miles east of St Austell, a 200ft deep, disused China Clay pit is the location for this exciting Millenium Project. Already, it has broken world records - here are the world's largest greenhouses which needed the world's largest free-standing scaffolding structure for their construction. The largest Biome - as they are known - is large enough to contain the entire Tower of London and yet it weighs only about 400 tons - roughly the same weight as the air inside it!

The Eden Project Fast-Track admission tickets can be purchased at Penhaven Touring Park. They're a great help in getting into Eden quickly. Current prices are :

  • Adults £10.00
  • Senior (60+) £7.50
  • Child (5 to 15yrs) £4.00
  • Family (2 adults - 3 children) £ 25.00

Or, if you cycle to Eden, you can get a £3.00 discount off the Adult ticket prices. There is a guided cycle trip run by Happy Trails Bike Rides which leaves Pentewan regularly each day during the summer season, using the Cornish Way cycle route to get you safely to the Eden Project.

Cornish Way

The Cornish Way, a network of cycle trails,- using quiet roads and traffic-free cycle paths - across the County linking to the National Cycle Routes, runs past the entrance of Penhaven Touring Park. This provides easy, traffic-free access for walkers and cyclists down the valley to Pentewan and up the valley to St Austell. It also offers a slightly more challenging access to the Lost Gardens of Heligan and on to Mevagissey.

In the near future, it is planned to continue the path through St Austell, north to the Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum and on to Bodmin. Details of the complete Cornish Way and cycling in Cornwall can be found here.
