Fishing

Cornwall is a fantastic place for both the novice and experienced fishermen, with opportunities for freshwater, sea and sport fishing. You will find many local fisherman who offer sea fishing trips, particularly in Mevagissey, just 3 miles along the coast from Pentewan.

 

Riding

Pony trekking and horse riding is a fairly new sport to the Pentewan area, however it is becoming increasingly popular . Plus, it's a great way to see the spectacular coastal scenery. Keith and Betty are happy to put you in touch with the local riding stables, including Trill Horse Trails and Riding Centre, who offer safe off-road riding for all the family, and promise panoramic views of St Austell Bay and the surrounding countryside. Beaches

Besides Pentewan's fantastic beach, there are many more glorious white sandy beaches and coves which are accessible by car or bike from Penhaven Touring Park, including exciting Carlyon Bay, secluded Hemmick, fascinating Gorran Haven, picturesque Caerhays Castle, and Porthpean. There's something for everyone, and you never know, you may just discover your own favourite whilst exploring the wild and rugged coastline for yourself.

Cycling

Penhaven Touring Park is the ideal base for a family cycling holiday. The Cornish Way, a network of cycle trails,- using quiet roads and traffic-free cycle paths - across the County linking to the National Cycle Routes, runs past the entrance of Penhaven Touring Park.

This provides easy, traffic-free access for walkers and cyclists down the valley to Pentewan and up the valley to St Austell. It also offers a slightly more challenging access to the Lost Gardens of Heligan and on to Mevagissey.

Walking

The whole of the Cornish Riviera is littered with trails for walkers. In particular, the Roseland Peninsula offers a wide variety of scenery for walkers, from the stunning Coastal Path, to rolling hills and wooded valley, to dramatic moorland. The collection of trails known as the 'Cornish Way' can be explored on foot or by bicycle.

Guided Walks

For walkers who prefer not to use a map and compass, there are guided walks available in the summer, including the very popular series of Daphne Du Maurier walks. The walks themselves are based on the novels written by Daphne Du Maurier, including 'Rebecca', 'House on the Strand', and 'Jamaica Inn'. The dates, times, prices, and meeting places for all the walks can be found on the 'Guided walks in Du Maurier's Country' posters and leaflets in the Tourist Information Centres, or call (01726) 833616 for more information or to reserve a place on a walk.

Water Sports

Cornwall is the home of the British surfer, and the combination of warm sunshine, beautiful beaches, and sheltered bays, make the county an ideal destination for the watersports enthusiast. Windsurfing, water ski-ing, canoeing, snorkelling, diving and sailing are all on offer at a variety of locations. At Pentewan, all of the above are available for those with their own gear and experience, otherwise equipment hire and tuition can booked at several venues nearby. South West Water offer watersports at some of their lakes, or the watersports centre at Menherion, Redruth offers tuition in power-boating, sailing, and windsurfing.

Tennis

Tennis can be arranged via Keith and Betty at courts across the road from Penhaven Touring Park.

In addition, St Austell Tennis Club welcomes visiting tennis players of a Club standard at their club sessions : Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.00pm, Saturday afternoons from 2.00pm. The Tennis Club meets every week of the year (weather permitting) at St Austell Rugby Club's "Tregorrick Park" where there are six all-weather courts, four of which can be flood-lit.

Golf

St Austell has a selection of three 18-hole golf courses ;

  • St Austell Golf Club
  • Carlyon Bay Golf Club
  • Porthpean Golf Course & Driving range.

St Austell Club is located just off the St Austell - Truro road, A390, near Polgooth village.

Carlyon Bay Golf Club is a links course atop the cliffs at Carlyon Bay, to the east of St Austell

Porthpean, south of St Austell, has superb views across St Austell Bay, making as enjoyable for the non-golfer accompanying the game! It is a Pay-and-Play course open to all and has a dedicated driving range for practising your swing.
